Culture and Community
a Latin American Cultural Immersion
The United States is the second largest Spanish speaking country in the world, and the downstate region of New York an important center of the Hispanic-American community. This class will provide students with an understanding of Latin American culture and its relevance within their communities and daily lives. Students will meet in person throughout Westchester and on Zoom, learning about geography, language, and cuisine and gain practical skills including basic Spanish language, cooking, and learning to plan and prepare for travel, all culminating in a five day “practical application” excursion to Puerto Rico where lessons and discussions will be put to practice in an intensive cultural immersion. Upon completion, participants will have a broader understanding of Latin culture and how it shapes our broader “American” culture, and will have developed practical life skills to be more conscious, effective travelers and citizens.
In person classes: Sunday, June 5th, June 12th and June 19th. (12pm – 3pm)
Zoom classes: Weekly one hour sessions throughout July. (Wednesday 6pm)
August 4-9, 2022: An optional 5 day immersion experience in Puerto Rico (travel expenses and meals not included) with scheduled activities highlighting Puerto Rican culture, foods, history and geography.
